About me

Mariette Peens

To combining different styles of art leads to a different spin on reality and perception. Composite art therefore contains many layers of meaning.
My work can be classified as "Composite Pop art", because my work has elements of black and white Pop art combined with abstract Henna patterns and Arabic calligraphy. This is a great way to interweave arcane concepts such as philosophy, the depths of time, the mystery of memory, theories of creation, and the assorted pursuits of science (to name just a few!)

Since I moved to Sohar the influence of Oman can be seen in the colours of my paintings and my expressions of the culture. The Omani culture stayed pure for many centuries, with little changes in the traditions of the people.

I'm very interested in the Omani women and currently I am investigating the henna patterns that Omani women paint on their hands and arms. It is a symbol of beauty for me.

The word Calligraphy is from the ancient Greek word kallos that mean beauty". Calligraphy is a type of visual art related to writing. It is the design and execution of lettering with a broad tip instrument or brush in one stroke.

I use Arabic Calligraphy in my work. The text of each work is everyday words that have to do with the painting. The Calligraphy can all so appear as a pattern, to someone that's not used to Arabic Calligraphy.

The most important element in my work is the Omani figures.   I use day to day Omani way of living, but I treat it as the Pop artist treated the popular culture of the 1950. “They are pop stars to me"
